Living with pain can be really challenging, and for many people with disabilities, opioids can provide
much-needed relief. 6.5% of people with disabilities have reported having an opioid use disorder,
and around 52% have used opioids. Healthy People 2030 is working to help reduce the number
of people aged 12 and older in the U.S. who experience opioid addiction.
If you’re taking opioids, follow your provider’s instructions carefully can make a big difference.
Take your medication only as prescribed, and don’t increase the dose or take it more often without
checking with your doctor. It’s also best to avoid sharing your medication with
anyone else even loved ones who may be in pain. Opioid use can lead to dependency.
