The government gave Māori an ultimatum: take our deal, or we can't tell the innocent from
the guilty when things get bad. Back in 1881, the government tried to settle land disputes
by offering some land back to Māori. But there was a catch: you had to accept their terms.
A leader named Te Whiti and his followers refused, holding out for true justice.
The government called them troublemakers and issued a final, public warning. They told everyone
to leave Te Whiti or risk getting caught in the crossfire. It was a clear threat: accept our version
of peace, or face the consequences together.
