Ancient Egyptians believed you needed your body for the afterlife, but definitely not
your brain. During mummification, they would literally pull the brain out through the nose
with a hook. The heart, however, was left inside because they believed
it was the center of intelligence and emotion. Other organs were removed,
preserved in special canopic jars, and the body was dried out with natron salt for 70 days.
After being washed and filled with fragrant substances, it was wrapped in hundreds of yards
of linen. This wasn't just for preservation; it was a sacred ritual to ensure
the soul could return.
