Nigeria: A Colonial Experiment

Nigeria is not a country....It is a colonial experiment. Before 1914, Nigeria did not

exist. There was no flag. No anthem. No single identity. What existed instead

were nations—powerful, organized, and sovereign. The Yoruba ruled from sacred cities

with kings whose authority was spiritual and political. The Hausa–Fulani governed vast caliphates

that stretched across deserts and trade routes. The Igbo practiced one of the oldest

systems of participatory democracy known to man—no kings, no thrones, power shared among
