It was April fourteenth, nineteen twelve. The Titanic felt like a floating
palace, safe and sturdy. Suddenly, a faint shudder ran through the
hull. It was just a slight vibration, barely noticeable. There is no
cause for alarm, sir. A minor issue. Please return to your cabin comfortably.
Up on deck, some passengers were actually playing football with chunks of ice from the
berg. Then I saw it. Icy water creeping silently over the
beautiful marble stairs in the lower decks. The music kept playing,
but the screams were starting to drown out the violins of the band.
