Welcome to a new episode of Origins of Music! Today, we delve into
the world of Baroque France. Our focus: Jacques Champion de Chambonnieres.
He's often called the ' father of the French harpsichord school'. Born around 1601,
he hailed from esteemed court musicians. Chambonnieres served as court musician to King
Louis XIII. And later, he continued his prestigious role under King Louis XIV.
His compositions and playing shaped the harpsichord's evolution. He was also an influential teacher,
mentoring many virtuosos. His ' Pièces de clavecin' were among the first printed collections.
Known for elegance, his pieces feature intricate ornamentation. He established the French harpsichord style,
