Your house can cool itself for free, without any AC. It's all about a design trick called
passive cooling. First, you orient your home so its narrow side catches the
prevailing wind. Then, you place windows on opposite walls to create cross-ventilation,
which naturally pushes hot air out. Think about the sun. By placing your
most-used rooms on the south side, you get warm winter light but are shielded from the intense
summer sun. Planting trees adds natural shade, and using light-colored pavement instead
of black asphalt reflects heat away. It’s not magic; it’s just designing with nature to build
a comfortable home and slash your energy bills.
