Your body is only 36% efficient at turning food into energy. Plants are like
tiny solar-powered chefs, using sunlight to turn the carbon dioxide we exhale
into sugar. Their waste product is the oxygen we need to breathe. Then,
our cells take that sugar and, inside tiny power plants called mitochondria, burn it to create
ATP—the energy currency of our bodies. Most of the energy from that sugar is actually lost
as heat, which is what keeps us warm. Our exhaust is CO2, which plants then
use to start the whole cycle over again. It's a planetary energy loop.
