crime most notably Judith Campbell Exner. Exner served as a go-between for
Kennedy and Mafia figures like Sam Giancana, one of the most powerful mob bosses
in America. At the same time, the Kennedy administration publicly declared war on organized
crime, with Attorney General Robert Kennedy aggressively prosecuting Mafia leaders.
The contradiction was dangerous. A president privately entangled with criminal intermediaries while
his government publicly attacked them created serious national-security risks. It was a collision
