For over a century, American prisoners were legally considered slaves of the state with absolutely
zero rights. Judges literally refused to get involved, sticking to a strict hands-off policy.
That all changed in the sixties when the Supreme Court finally decided the Constitution
doesn't stop at the prison gate. Suddenly, inmates could sue for religious freedom,
medical care, and protection from brutality. But there is a massive catch.
Your rights only exist if they don't mess with security. If a warden says a magazine or a
prayer service is dangerous, that right disappears instantly. You keep your humanity,
but security always comes first.
