A character in a novel once confronted its author, begging not to be killed off.
This actually happened in Spanish literature. Miguel de Unamuno created "nivolas," where his character
from *Niebla* rebels against his own creator. This was just the start of writers
messing with reality. Valle-Inclán invented the "esperpento," a style that grotesquely distorted reality
to criticize Spain. After the Civil War, literature became a weapon.
Some authors used "tremendismo" to show life's ugliest side, while others used
social realism to denounce the dictatorship. From experimental novels to modern historical fiction,
Spanish literature has always been a battleground for ideas.
