Rome started as a tiny city and took over the world by offering citizenship and winning wars,
but that success was a trap. They brought in so many enslaved people that regular
farmers went broke, sparking massive inequality and scary revolts like Spartacus. Then,
generals like Caesar got way too famous and turned their armies against the state.
The government literally couldn't handle the empire it built. Augustus finally fixed the chaos
by killing the Republic to start the Empire, trading freedom for stability to shape the modern
world.
