always happen in factories. Sometimes—it happens at home. Sarah Boone was
born in the early 1800s, a formerly enslaved Black woman navigating freedom in a nation
still stacked against her. In 1892, Boone patented an improved ironing
board. Unlike flat boards of the time, hers was narrow and curved,
designed to better fit women’s clothing. This simple change made ironing faster, easier,
and more precise—especially for garments women wore daily. Domestic labor powered American households,
