Do you know what it means when a whole nation holds its breath at the same time?
On March 21, 1960, in a small township called Sharpeville, South Africa,
that’s exactly what happened. Thousands of Black South Africans gathered peacefully to protest
the racist pass laws that controlled every step they took—where they lived,
where they worked, even where they were allowed to exist. They came with empty
hands, open palms, and courage heavier than their fear. But the apartheid
government saw unarmed people as a threat. By midday, the atmosphere changed. Police trucks rolled
in. Officers surrounded the crowd. Children climbed onto rooftops to
