Survival in a Soviet Gulag costs way more than just physical pain. Gustaw Herling was
thrown into a frozen hell for five years based on total lies. The reality there was insane.
He watched a prisoner literally roast his own arm in a fire every night just to get a day
off to read. People would sell out their best friends for an extra spoon of soup.
Gustaw barely escaped by starving himself in protest. But the ending is the darkest part.
Years later, a survivor asked him to forgive a betrayal committed to stay alive.
Gustaw turned his back and walked away. Some things can never be forgiven.
