Every winter, parts of India turn into a gas chamber, and a huge reason is stubble burning.
After harvest, farmers burn millions of tons of leftover crop stalks. This isn't a small
bonfire. Burning just 63 million tons of stubble releases 91 million tons
of CO2 and over a million tons of tiny, toxic particles into the air.
This massive smoke cloud travels for hundreds of miles, choking major cities. In November 2019,
Delhi's air quality index hit a severe 487. This pollution causes serious lung disease,
cancer, and can shorten lives by years. The crazy part? This stubble could
be turned into biofuel, compost, or even generate electricity.
