was a total accident. In 1928, Alexander Fleming found mold killing bacteria on a petri
dish. Boom, penicillin was born. This kicked off the age of antibiotics,
drugs that are selectively toxic, meaning they kill bacteria without hurting us.
Some smash their cell walls, protein-making machinery. We found tons of them,
mostly from other soil bacteria. But then, the germs fought back.
Superbugs like MRSA emerged, resistant to our best drugs. Now,
we're in a high-tech arms race, even using AI to discover new antibiotics to stay one step
ahead.
