A flooded field, not a sword, decided the fate of Anglo-Saxon England. In 655 AD,
the powerful pagan King Penda brought a massive army to crush the Christian King Oswiu.
Oswiu was so outnumbered he offered a fortune in treasure to make Penda leave, but Penda refused.
Backed into a corner, Oswiu prayed, vowing to dedicate his infant daughter to God if he won.
On the day of the battle, heavy rains had turned the field into a swamp.
As the fight began, some of Penda’s own allies deserted him. Oswiu’s smaller
army charged, Penda fell, and his massive force panicked. They fled straight
into the flooded river, where more men drowned than were killed by swords.
