You won't believe about the battle where a Roman Emperor was captured—a truly rare and humiliating
defeat in Roman history! The Battle of Edessa was a major confrontation in 260 AD between
the armies of the Roman Empire and the Sasanian Empire of Persia. It took place near
Edessa (modern-day Şanlıurfa, Turkey) in Roman Mesopotamia. The Roman forces
were led by Emperor Valerian, and the Sasanian forces were led by Shapur I,
the King of Kings. Valerian marched east to confront the Persians and relieve the besieged
city of Edessa. However, the Roman army suffered a crushing defeat. Accounts vary,
but the Roman army was either entirely destroyed or forced to surrender en masse.
