Gibson posted a 1.12 ERA — the lowest in modern baseball history. 13 shutouts.
22 wins. And only 38 earned runs all season. Every pitch looked like it was thrown
in anger — and that’s because it was. In Game 1 of the World Series,
he struck out 17 batters, setting a World Series record that still stands.
Pitchers were too dominant in ’68 — Gibson’s ERA, Denny McLain’s 31 wins,
