The Family Dinner Dash Ritual

Growing up, I thought our family's "dinner dash" was the ultimate thrill. We'd dress up,

head to a classy restaurant, order drinks and appetizers, and then just as

things were getting cozy, dad's "work emergency" would hit. With a dramatic

flair, he'd take a call, look intensely stressed, and announce we had to leave immediately.

My sister and I found it both hilarious and electrifying. We'd dash out, leaving puzzled

staff with a $20 tip and promises of return. Our escape route always led us to

a fast-food joint, where happy meals and tales of dad's pretend work crises awaited.

This became a monthly ritual, and we’d silently predict when the emergency might
