Identity is not something you are simply born with. It is something that is continuously
formed and reformed. According to cultural theorist Kathryn Woodward, identity is created
through everyday social interactions. We understand who we are by comparing ourselves to others.
Identity always involves two things at the same time: sameness and difference. We feel connected
to people who are like us, and we define ourselves against those who are different.
This happens through social categorization. Society places people into categories like gender,
nationality, class, or ethnicity. Once these categories exist,
social comparison follows. We evaluate ourselves and others based on these categories,
