International law is actually just a massive honor system where countries basically choose
which rules they want to follow. We have laws determining ocean borders based on how far a cannon
could shoot in the 1700s and treaties saying nobody owns the moon, yet countries are
constantly trying to claim it. It gets even wilder because nations can just be a persistent
objector and opt out of customs they don't like. The entire legal framework holding
the world together is really just global peer pressure.
