The Historical Glitch of Earning Freedom

Your freedom to make money is basically a glitch in history. Under the feudal system,

you owned absolutely nothing. You traded your labor just to exist on a lord's land,

and they held all the legal and police power over you. Even if you escaped to a city,

you ran into Guilds. These were essentially cartels that controlled every single trade, blocking you from

selling anything unless you followed their strict rules. While Western Europe eventually moved

toward cities and wages, Eastern Europe actually doubled down on serfdom just to

export grain. It took centuries of plagues and revolutions just to replace bowing to a lord

with signing a contract.
