The schwa, written with the phonetic symbol /ə/, is the most common
sound in the English language, yet it often goes unnoticed. It’s a neutral,
relaxed vowel sound that occurs in unstressed syllables of words. Phonetically, it sounds like a
short, gentle “uh.” You can hear it in the first syllable of “about,” the
middle of “banana,” or the last syllable of “sofa.” In each case, the vowel is not
fully pronounced—it’s softened because the syllable isn’t stressed. The tongue stays
in the middle of the mouth, the lips stay neutral, and there’s no muscular tension.
That’s what makes it a “reduced” vowel sound. The schwa is incredibly important because
