The Argentinean Revolution was spearheaded by its heroic leader, Jose San Martin, revered as the
Father of the Nation. Formal independence from Spain was declared on July 9,
1816, at the historic Congress of Tucumán. In 1853, Argentina adopted a
constitution, establishing a federal system and division of powers, inspired by the
United States. This marked the removal of the Spanish viceroy and the establishment of
a local governing body, the Primera Junta. However, the newly independent
nation remained deeply divided by decentralization and a profound lack of national cohesion for decades.
