The Man Who Survived Two Atomic Bombs. In 1945,

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was on a business trip in Hiroshima. On August 6th, the first atomic

bomb was dropped. Yamaguchi was badly burned and thought he was going to die.

Against all odds, he survived the blast. He returned home to Nagasaki just

three days later. On August 9th, the second atomic bomb hit Nagasaki. He survived both

bombings and lived to be ninety-three. Japan recognizes him as a double survivor,

a niju hibakusha. Imagine surviving one, then walking right into the next. It is truly

impossible to fathom.
