The Martyrdom of Boniface

This English monk chopped down a sacred pagan oak tree just to prove a point. His name was Wynfreth,

but the Pope renamed him Boniface and sent him to convert the Germanic tribes. He famously felled

the sacred Donar's Oak, and when the gods didn't strike him down,

people started converting. He became a huge deal, organizing the church and shaping early

Europe. But his story has a wild ending. On his final mission, he and his followers

were ambushed. Boniface told his men not to fight and was martyred, supposedly shielding

himself with a bible.
