The story of Jefferson Davis being captured in a dress is a complete fabrication, and the US government
intentionally pushed the lie. When Union troops raided his camp, Davis’s wife threw
her waterproof overcoat and a shawl over him so he could escape unrecognized in the dark.
That’s it. But the story got twisted. Northern cartoonists went wild,
drawing him in a frilly dress and bonnet. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton knew
the truth. When he saw the actual clothes—just a man's coat and a shawl—he hid them
to keep the embarrassing myth alive. Davis could never escape the legend.
