A Harvard-trained neurosurgeon spent seven days in a coma. In 2008, Eben Alexander contracted
severe bacterial meningitis. Doctors say the infection severely damaged his neocortex the part of
the brain responsible for thought, memory, and conscious experience. Yet during that
coma, Alexander says he experienced something he called… the Core.
A realm beyond space and time. Overwhelming love. Complete clarity. No fear.
No confusion. Here is the problem, experiences that detailed are supposed to
require a functioning cortex. If consciousness is only the brain, how did this
happen?
