The Torturous Art of Upside-Down Crucifixion

Romans crucified people upside down because it was considered even more humiliating than regular crucifixion.

The most famous case was Saint Peter, who according to tradition asked to be crucified

upside down because he felt unworthy to die the same way as Jesus. But here's the twisted

part. Being inverted actually prolonged the agony. Blood rushed to your head,

increasing pressure and making it harder to breathe. Your lungs would slowly fill with

fluid as you hung there. Death could take days instead of hours.

The Romans knew exactly what they were doing. It wasn't mercy. It was calculated

torture designed to make an example out of you.
