The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire killed 146 workers in 1911 because factory owners locked exit
doors to prevent theft. When fire broke out, young immigrant
women were trapped on upper floors with no sprinklers or safe fire escapes. Some jumped from
windows to escape the flames. This preventable tragedy happened because profits
mattered more than safety. The public outrage forced governments to create new laws
requiring unlocked exits, proper fire escapes, and building inspections. Labor unions grew
stronger and worker protections spread nationwide. Every workplace safety rule we follow
today exists because people died when those protections didn't.
