3. The Two Core Parts of a Sentence: Subject and Predicate At the highest level,
every complete sentence can be divided into two main constituents, each with a specific grammatical function:
the Subject and the Predicate. Before defining them, it's crucial to
understand the difference between a constituent's form and its function. Think of it this way: a room can
have the form of a square, but its function is to be a living room.
Similarly, in syntax, a group of words has a categorical form (like a Noun
Phrase), but it also performs a specific job or function within the sentence.
"Subject" and "Predicate" are terms that describe the function of a sentence's two main parts.
