Understanding Your Rights in Criminal Law

You can literally get away with a crime if the police break the rules. It is called procedural

law and it is the only thing standing between you and a jail cell. If the cops mess

up the arrest or search you illegally, that evidence gets tossed out in a Voir Dire,

which is basically a trial within a trial to test fairness. Remember, you have the right

to stay silent so you do not incriminate yourself. Judges look at your intent and whether

you were actually reckless or just made a mistake. Knowing your rights is the difference

between freedom and a life sentence.
