A bear literally served as a soldier in World War II. His name was Wojtek, and the Polish army
enlisted him as a private, where he helped carry heavy ammunition. But that’s not the
only weird story from the war. The last Japanese soldier didn't surrender until 1974,
almost thirty years after it ended. The Soviets had an all-female bomber regiment so feared,
the Germans called them the "Night Witches" because they cut their engines to glide silently
towards their targets. The Americans even developed plans for "bat bombs," intending to release
bats with tiny incendiary devices over Japanese cities. Perhaps the strangest event was the Battle
of Castle Itter, where American and German soldiers fought side-by-side against an attacking
