Whales literally collapse their own lungs so they don’t explode underwater. I am deep diving
into marine biology right now and the physics are actually terrifying. To survive the crushing
pressure of the deep ocean, whales have evolved to flatten their ribcages and stop
breathing entirely. They don't store oxygen in their lungs like us because that would cause
barotrauma. Instead, they pack oxygen directly into their muscles using something
called myoglobin, which makes their insides look crazy red. They basically turn
off their metabolism and become oxygen-hoarding torpedoes. It is terrifyingly efficient and I
have never respected a mammal more.
