Journal Entry — October 12 I keep telling myself I’m tired, that the long hours

at work are messing with my head, but tonight proved it’s not just exhaustion. At 1:23 a.m.,

I woke to the sound of someone whispering my name. It wasn’t coming from outside,

or the hallway, but from the inside of my closet. I thought maybe I was dreaming,

so I lay there listening. Then the closet door clicked, like a latch being undone from the

inside. I forced myself not to move. A thin strip of darkness slipped

into my room as the door slowly creaked open. I couldn’t see anything—just blackness—but the
