The submersible lost power at seven miles down. In the dark, something brushed

the hull—slow, curious. Our sonar lit up with a shape too large to fit the

screen. A sound came through the metal, not a roar, but a whisper that

vibrated my bones. Lights flickered back on for one second. An eye stared in,

wider than the viewport, unblinking. Then a mouth opened beneath it, unfolding like a

nightmare. The last thing we heard wasn’t the hull cracking—it was the thing outside

saying, “You’re very far from the surface.”
