In the U.S. military, phones are often required to be silent on base for safety
and security reasons 🇺🇸. On many Department of Defense installations using phones while
driving or in sensitive areas is restricted to prevent distractions and accidents which makes up a big part
of traffic safety rules on base. More importantly in secure facilities and operational
zones phones must be silent or even turned off to protect Operational Security (OPSEC).
Phones can unintentionally reveal locations, troop movements or classified information over unsecured networks,
which could be intercepted by adversaries. So whether it’s avoiding accidents following base traffic
rules, or protecting sensitive information keeping phones silent helps keep personnel safe
