4K to 1080p Converter: 9 Ways to Convert 4K Video (Free & Paid)

Exact settings to convert 4K video to 1080p in HandBrake, VLC, iMovie, Premiere Pro and online tools. Also covers why upscaling 1080p to 4K adds no detail, and why you shouldn't convert before a YouTube upload.

9 Easy Ways to Convert Your 4K YouTube Videos to Smooth 1080p
On this page

To convert 4K to 1080p, open the file in a free converter such as HandBrake, choose a 1080p preset (Fast 1080p30 or HQ 1080p30 Surround) and export. A 1080p frame (1920x1080) is exactly a quarter of a 4K frame (3840x2160), so the downscale stays sharp and the file gets much smaller.

The mistakes that ruin most conversions have nothing to do with the tool. The first is typing 1920x1080 for a vertical phone clip, which squashes it or shrinks it into a thin strip: a vertical 4K video (2160x3840) should become 1080x1920. The second is converting before a YouTube upload. If the video is going to YouTube, upload the 4K file and let viewers choose 1080p in the player.

4K vs 1080p: what changes when you convert

720pHD1280x720720x12801/9

Converting 4K to 1080p halves both the width and the height, so every block of 4 pixels becomes 1. Because the ratio is exact, converters don't have to guess, and the result looks clean. On a phone or laptop the difference is hard to see. On a large TV up close, 4K is visibly crisper.

When people search "4K to HD", they almost always mean 1080p (Full HD). Strictly speaking, "HD" is 720p, so pick 1080p unless you need the smallest possible file.

1080p is exactly one quarter of a 4K frame, so every 4 pixels become 1.

How to convert 4K to 1080p with HandBrake

HandBrake is a free, open-source transcoder and the best free 4K to 1080p converter for quality.

  1. Install HandBrake and open it.
  2. Click Open Source and select your 4K file (or a folder to convert several).
  3. In Presets, choose General > Fast 1080p30 for speed, or HQ 1080p30 Surround for better quality at a slower encode.
  4. If your footage is 60 fps, open the Video tab and set Framerate to "Same as source". The 1080p30 presets cap output at 30 fps.
  5. Open the Dimensions tab and check that the output size reads 1920x1080 (or 1080x1920 for a vertical clip). If a vertical video shows a much smaller width, set the size manually.
  6. Name the file under Save As, keep MP4 as the format and click Start Encode.

Keep the H.264 encoder if the file will play on old TVs or go into an editor. H.265 makes smaller files, but some older devices struggle to play it.

How to convert 4K video to 1080p with VLC

VLC media player is free and can convert as well as play. It has no ready-made 1080p profile, so you set the size yourself.

  1. Open Media > Convert / Save (Ctrl+R).
  2. Click Add, choose the 4K file, then click Convert / Save.
  3. In Profile, select "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)".
  4. Click the wrench icon to edit the profile, open Video codec > Resolution, and set the frame size to width 1920 and height 1080 (1080 and 1920 for vertical). Click Save.
  5. Click Browse to name the output file, then Start.

VLC gives you fewer quality controls than HandBrake. It's fine for a one-off job but not the first choice for footage you care about.

How to convert 4K to 1080p online free

Browser tools avoid an install, but you have to upload the whole file first. With 4K files that is slow, so they suit short clips.

  • 123apps offers free browser tools for converting, cutting and editing video. Upload the file, choose the output format and resolution in the settings, then download the result. The free tier shows ads.
  • ClipConverter converts video from a link and lets you choose the output format. Only use link-based converters on videos you own or have permission to download. YouTube's Terms of Service don't allow downloading other people's videos unless YouTube shows a download option. Free converter sites also tend to be heavy on ads and pop-ups.

For your own YouTube uploads, YouTube Studio has a Download option in the Content list. That copy may not be full resolution, so keep your original files.

5 more ways to convert 4K to 1080p

iMovie (Mac, free)

Add the 4K clip to a project, then choose File > Share > File. Set Resolution to 1080p and Quality to High, click Next and save. If you're already trimming the clip, this is the fastest route on a Mac.

Adobe Premiere Pro (paid)

Adobe Premiere Pro only makes sense if you already pay for it or are editing anyway.

  1. Import the 4K clip and drag it onto a new sequence.
  2. Open the export settings and choose H.264.
  3. Set the frame size to 1920x1080 (1080x1920 for vertical) and keep the frame rate matching the source.
  4. Export.

Editing in a 4K sequence and exporting 1080p has a bonus: you can punch in to about double size on a shot without it going soft.

Freemake Video Converter (Windows)

Freemake Video Converter is a beginner-friendly Windows app. Add your video, choose MP4 as the output, pick a 1080p preset and click Convert. The free version has added Freemake branding to output, which is removed by upgrading. Its last release dates from December 2022, so test it on a short clip first.

Any Video Converter Free (Windows, Mac)

Drag your file into Any Video Converter Free, choose MP4 as the output profile and set the video size to 1920x1080 in the output settings, then convert. It also bundles a compressor, cutter and cropper.

Wondershare UniConverter (paid)

Add your files, choose MP4 with a 1080p option as the output, and convert them all at once. Its main advantage over free tools is batch processing for large folders of 4K footage.

Just want to watch YouTube in 1080p? Change the quality

If a 4K YouTube video buffers, you don't need to convert anything. Click the gear icon in the player, open Quality and choose 1080p. On mobile, tap the video, open the settings menu and choose Quality. YouTube Premium members may also see a "1080p Premium" option with enhanced bitrate.

This changes what you stream, not the file, so nothing is saved to your device.

How to get 4K quality on YouTube

Upload the original 4K file. YouTube creates every lower resolution itself, so viewers on slow connections still get 1080p, 720p or less, and big screens get 4K. Converting to 1080p before upload throws away detail YouTube would have kept.

  • Processing takes time. YouTube makes lower resolutions available first, and the 4K version can appear later. If a fresh upload looks soft, wait before re-uploading.
  • Size limits. Uploads can be up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Unverified accounts are limited to 15 minutes per video.
  • The upscale trick. Some creators upscale 1080p footage to 4K before uploading because YouTube tends to stream 4K uploads with more data, which can look cleaner. It adds no real detail, so test it on one video before making it a habit.

To turn a long 4K upload into vertical clips for Shorts, TikTok or Reels, the YouTube clip maker takes the video link and cuts it into short clips.

Can you convert 1080p to 4K, or 360p to 1080p?

You can, but the video won't get sharper. Any converter above will output 3840x2160 from a 1080p file if you set the frame size, but it only enlarges existing pixels: each 1080p pixel becomes 4. You get a bigger file with the same detail.

Converting 360p to 1080p is a bigger stretch: each side triples, so every source pixel becomes 9. The result is larger and blurrier. AI upscalers (Any Video Converter, for example, advertises one) try to invent missing detail. They can help a little, but faces and text often come out looking artificial.

Decision rules:

  • If a higher-resolution original exists anywhere (camera card, cloud backup, project files), use it instead of upscaling.
  • Upscale only when a platform demands a minimum size. Instagram Reels, for example, need at least 720 pixels.
  • If you need a different shape (9:16, 4:5, 16:9 or 1:1) rather than different sharpness, use a tool to resize video online, or crop your videos online if you only need to trim the frame.

Prompt to try

Make a 30-second vertical explainer titled "Stop converting your 4K videos before uploading to YouTube." Open with the hook "You're throwing away detail every time you do this." Explain that YouTube builds 1080p and lower versions itself, and that vertical 4K becomes 1080x1920, not 1920x1080. Use clean motion graphics, a calm confident voiceover and bold captions.

Run it in Revid

Skip the conversion: export at the size you need

The cleanest conversion is the one you never run, because each re-encode adds a little compression. If you make short-form videos with Revid, choose the size at export: the timeline editor exports in 720p, 1080p or 4K at 30 or 60 fps. For a 1080p version, pick 1080p there instead of exporting 4K and converting later.

FAQ

How do I convert 8K video to 1080p?

The same way as 4K: open it in HandBrake, pick a 1080p preset and export. 8K to 1080p shrinks each side by four, so the result stays sharp, but expect a long encode.

Does converting 4K to 1080p lose quality?

You lose resolution, which is hard to see on phones and laptops but visible on large TVs. Each re-encode also adds some compression, so convert from the original 4K file and keep it as your master.

Does converting 4K to 1080p reduce file size?

Yes, usually by a lot, because the frame has a quarter of the pixels. The final size also depends on the quality or bitrate setting. If size is your real goal, see our guide on how to compress a video.

How do I make my phone record in 1080p instead of 4K?

On iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and choose 1080p HD at 30 or 60 fps. On Android, open the camera app's settings or the resolution toggle in the viewfinder.

What is the best free 4K video converter?

HandBrake, for its quality control and presets on Windows, Mac and Linux. VLC works if it's already installed, and iMovie is the simplest choice on a Mac.
