2 A.M. Outside His Apartment

PART 1 I thought I knew my wife. Then I saw her car outside my best

friend’s apartment at 2 a.m. My hands were shaking. I stayed in my car. Lights were on upstairs.

I told myself it was nothing. Maybe she was helping him. Maybe his mom was

sick. Then I saw her jacket. The one I bought her last winter. Hanging on his chair.

I called her phone. It went to voicemail. I texted. “Where are you?” Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared. I watched the window. Two shadows moved behind the curtain. I felt sick.

My chest hurt. I couldn’t breathe. After twenty minutes, she finally replied. “Out with friends.”

Out with friends. At two in the morning. In his apartment. I opened my door. I was ready to go
