They call it a hairstyle. We call it history. Dreadlocks weren’t born in salons. They were born in
rebellion, in prayer, in power. Long before combs and clippers our
ancestors wore their spirit in strands. From the temples of ancient Egypt, to the warriors
of Ethiopia, from Hindu holy men to the Maasai elders locks were a crown.
Sacred. Spiritual. Strong. But when Black people wore them in the
West, suddenly they became “dirty.” “Unprofessional.” “Dangerous.”
Here’s what they don’t tell you the word dreadlocks came from colonizers. They looked at our
hair and called it “dreadful.” What they feared wasn’t the hair… it was the freedom
