You can see faint objects better by looking away from them. Your eye has two
light detectors: cones and rods. Cones are in the center of your vision, handling bright
light and sharp detail. But they're useless in the dark. That's where rods
come in. Rods are your night vision specialists. They're incredibly sensitive to dim
light, but they're located in your peripheral vision, not the center.
So, next time you're stargazing, don't look directly at a faint star.
Look slightly to the side. This shifts the star's light onto your rods,
making the invisible suddenly visible.
