A 23-year-old bookworm was made a puppet ruler, but he ended up trying to overthrow
an entire religion. In 355 AD, Emperor Constantius II needed a figurehead for the chaotic
western provinces. He chose his cousin Julian, a quiet scholar he thought would
be easy to control. He sent Julian to Gaul with a tiny escort, basically expecting
him to fail. But Julian, who secretly devoured books on ancient military tactics,
was no pawn. He transformed into a brilliant general, crushing massive barbarian armies
and winning the fierce loyalty of his soldiers. They eventually proclaimed him emperor.
Once in power, Julian, the so-called 'Apostate,' launched a radical campaign to ditch
