The peace treaty that saved the Pilgrims ended in one of the bloodiest wars in American history.
For 50 years, the Wampanoag and the English coexisted after Massasoit helped the first
colonists. But as settlers kept taking more land, Massasoit's own
son, Metacom, known as Philip, had enough. He united several
tribes and went to war. It was brutal. Towns were burned, and both sides suffered
huge losses. The English fought back ruthlessly, leading to events like the Great Swamp
Fight. In the end, Metacom was killed, and Native resistance in New England was
crushed, forever changing the balance of power.
