Your electronics are not safe in space, even behind heavy shielding.
Scientists just proved that when high-energy particles hit shielding, they shatter into
a shotgun spray of fragments that penetrate way deeper than we thought. Traditional testing
uses clean, perfect beams, but that’s not what space looks like. This new study smashed
lead ions through thick plastic until only fragments were left, and their computer
models predicted the exact damage rates perfectly. This is huge because it means we can
finally test thick, modern chips that old methods couldn't touch. Basically,
we just unlocked a cheat code for simulating deep-space radiation.
