Chocolate chip cookies were invented by accident in 1938 when Ruth Wakefield ran the Toll House
Inn in Massachusetts and was making chocolate cookies, but ran out of baker's chocolate.
She chopped up a Nestle chocolate bar and mixed the chunks into her dough,
expecting them to melt throughout. But instead, the pieces held their shape,
creating the first chocolate chip cookies, which her guests loved. Word spread fast,
and Nestle noticed their chocolate sales exploding in the region, so they investigated
and found Ruth's cookies were the reason. She made a deal with Nestle to print
her recipe on their packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate, which seemed great
