You are literally surfing on molten rock right now. Even though the ground feels solid,
the Earth’s crust is actually broken into massive plates floating on hot, semi-melted goo
called the asthenosphere. It is basically a giant, slow-motion car crash where continents
smash together to build mountains or rip apart to create oceans. When these plates
get stuck, pressure builds up until they snap, causing earthquakes, or magma punches
through to make volcanoes. Eventually, all that rock grinds down into soil,
which is the only reason we can grow food. The planet is constantly recycling itself
beneath your feet.
