Netflix didn't kill Blockbuster. Blockbuster killed itself by refusing a simple truth leaders
need to hear. In 2000, Netflix offered to sell itself to Blockbuster for 50
million dollars. Blockbuster laughed them out of the room. But here's what
most people miss. It wasn't about the money. Blockbuster already invented their own streaming
service in 1999. They had the technology, customers, and capital.
But they wouldn't cannibalize late fee revenue. That revenue made 800 million annually.
They chose short term profits over long term survival. Meanwhile, Netflix was willing
to lose money for years to build the future. Sometimes saving your business means destroying
