war. In the nineteen-sixties, the U.S. Department of Defense funded ARPANET.
The problem: how to communicate after a devastating nuclear strike. No central control.
No single point of failure. In nineteen-sixty-nine, the first internet message failed.
They were trying to send the word LOGIN. The system crashed after two letters.
Slowly, universities connected. No ads. No money. No corporations.
Just the mission. A military experiment escaped the lab. It wasn't designed to connect people.
